Frequently Asked Questions

Quick guidance for veterinary teams referring clients for behaviour support.

A veterinary referral ensures any underlying medical conditions—such as pain, illness, or medication side-effects—are evaluated before behavioural intervention. Up to 80% of referred cases have pain as a contributing factor. It is essential to maintain the vet-led team model for safe and effective care.

Refer to practitioners registered with the ABTC or APBC—such as Clinical Animal Behaviourists (CAB), Accredited Animal Behaviourists (AAB), or Veterinary Behaviourists (VB). These registers uphold standards of competence and formal complaints processes.

You will receive an initial written report plus updates at key decision points or changes in the treatment strategy. Open communication is a core part of the vet-led care model.

Non-veterinary behaviourists (CAB/AAB) may suggest medication options to you, but prescribing remains your responsibility. Veterinary Behaviourists (VB) may discuss and prescribe medication—but should still keep open communication with you.

While awaiting the full consultation, you can provide behavioural first aid—such as advising on safety, trigger avoidance, and managing the environment to reduce escalation.

Referring to qualified professionals ensures welfare-focused, scientifically supported intervention. It helps prevent potential harm from inappropriate methods and supports RCVS professional standards.
